December Booster 2021

Worthy Sirs and Dear Brothers,

My Brother Knights:  As Christmas joyfully approaches; we are once again reminded that Jesus is the reason for the season.  Christmas is not another day or another holiday.  This Advent, prepare yourselves for The Knight before Christmas.  San Salvador is once again at the forefront for the K of C. Our quote this Advent season is:

The Magi arrived in Jerusalem asking, “Where is the newborn king of the Jews?”  After their audience with Herod they set out to find him.  And behold, the star that they had seen at its rising preceded them, until it came and stopped over the place where the child was.  Upon entering the house they saw the child with Mary, his Mother.  They opened their treasures and offered gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh.  After they did him homage, they departed for their country by another way.

                      Matthew 2:1-12

Like the Magi, as we follow His way, we too can better accept ourselves as we are.  When we have times in our lives when we think that nothing can ever go the way it should, we need to remember that we are in God's hands and He has a plan for us.  When we are pressured to be someone, we are not, so we can fit in, we need to be reminded that we are accepted as we are and we are challenged to become the best person that God calls us to be.

Blessed Fr. Michael J. McGivney pray for us.

On behalf of the Council Officers, we wish you peace & happiness and good health.

Please continue to pray for the end of this pandemic.

FOUNDED BY A PRIEST TO PROTECT CATHOLIC FAMILIES

The Knights of Columbus insurance story begins in the winter of 1882 in the basement of St. Mary’s Church in New Haven, Conn.  It was there that our Venerable founder, Father Michael J. McGivney, gathered the men of his parish together to create a solution to a recurring problem.

Many Catholics — most of whom were immigrants — were working and living in unfavorable conditions. And many, tragically, were dying young, leaving behind widows and orphans with insufficient financial resources.  It was a cold reality that had confronted Father McGivney all too often — not only in the lives of his parishioners — but in his own. As a seminarian, he was forced to leave school and return home to aid his family when his father died unexpectedly.

Though this story of financial ruin for Catholic families was common, Father McGivney was convinced that there was a way to change the ending. He knew that if the Catholic men in his parish came together in mutual aid, widows and orphans could receive the support they needed.

He also knew that if Catholic men banded together, united by charity and unity, they could strengthen their faith, their families, and their communities.  So, he established the Knights of Columbus, and with it, a “pass-the-hat” insurance system to protect the Catholic families in his parish. Over time, that system has evolved, and today we stay true to our founding mission through our multi-billion dollar, top-rated insurance program. Members in the United States and Canada have exclusive access to our insurance program and products, including life insurance, retirement annuities, long-term care insurance, and disability income insurance.

Our charitable giving and fraternal service have continued to grow too. More than 1.9 million men in over a dozen countries across the globe are proud to call themselves Knights. Last year alone, these men and their families donated more than $175 million to charity and performed more than 73.5 million hours of service.

Featured Saint:  Nicholas

In many places St. Nicholas is the main gift giver. His feast day is December 6, which falls early in the Advent season. Some places he arrives in the middle of November and moves about the countryside, visiting schools and homes to find out if children have been good. Other places he comes in the night and finds carrots and hay for his horse or donkey along with children's wish lists. Small treats are left in shoes or stockings so the children will know he has come.

Where St. Nicholas is prominent, his day, not Christmas, is the primary gift giving day. Parties may be held on the eve, December 5th, and shoes or stockings left for St. Nicholas to fill during the night. Children will find treats of small gifts, fruit or nuts, and special Nicholas candies and cookies. St. Nicholas gifts are meant to be shared, not hoarded for oneself.

American Santa Claus became a symbol of generosity following World War II as American troops, dressed as Santa, gave food and toys to children in war-torn Europe. This happened first in Britain, Italy, France, the Netherlands, and eventually in Germany and Japan. For many it was the first time they were exposed to American Santa Claus, thus making him more visible than he had been before the war, and associating him with good things in children's minds. Santa's presence with US servicemen has continued in all the wars of the 20th century and into the 21st. This prominence has contributed to the demise of traditional gift-givers in many places, including even his own precursor, St. Nicholas.
