Joining the San Salvador Council
When you join the Knights of Columbus San Salvador Council you are joining…
A Heritage of Catholic Service
In Connecticut, 1882, the Knights of Columbus were founded on the principles of charity, unity and fraternity, by Father Michael J. McGivney and a group of parishioners. Their mission? To bring financial aid and assistance to sick, disabled, and needy members and their families.
Established as a mutual benefit society for working-class and immigrant Catholics in the United States, the Knights has grown into the world’s largest Catholic fraternal lay organization with over two million members and more than 16,000 local councils throughout the world.
Saint Pope John Paul II once referred to the order as the “strong right arm of the Church” for their support of the parishes, clergy and their charitable work.
Men Who Live Out their Faith
The Brothers of the San Salvador Council 283 have a commitment to living out our faith beyond mass on Sundays.
Our council seeks to unite the Catholic community of South Philadelphia, building up our parish ministries and charities, providing resources to those in need and serving our Philadelphia community at large. We lead and engage in a multitude of service projects, parish events, fundraising campaigns, special masses and spiritual development events throughout the year, and live out our Catholic faith using Corporal and Spiritual Works of Mercy as our guide.
We have worked to help rejuvenate parish life and a number of lay organizations following the 2020 pandemic and have established a new Young Adult Ministry serving South Philadelphia.
We also work toward the cause for canonization of our Order’s founder, Father Michael J. McGivney, as well as Philadelphia Augustinian priest, Father Bill Atkinson O.S.A.
Fundraising
Over the past 3 years alone our council has raised tens of thousands of dollars to support Catholic Charities of Philadelphia, in particular through programs like our Coats for Kids Drive and Spring Diaper Drive.
Our Community
It all begins with an idea. Maybe you want to launch a business. Maybe you want to turn a hobby into something more. Or maybe you have a creative project to share with the world. Whatever it is, the way you tell your story online can make all the difference.

As a member of the Knights of Columbus you also would have optional access to our award winning fraternal benefits resources. The Knights of Columbus was founded as a fraternal benefit society, which means we can provide financial security to members and their families, while turning premiums into charitable impact. If interested in any of these resources you'd be able to connect with our council's field agent.
